Lifeguard Training Course (includes CPR and First Aid for the Professional Rescuer)
So, you want to be a Lifeguard?
Our American Red Cross Lifeguard courses give you the necessary certifications to apply for a
lifeguarding job. If you meet the following prerequisites this is the course for you!
Prerequisites:
15 years of age by the last day of the course
300 yard swim test demonstrating front crawl, breaststroke, sidestroke, treading
Surface Dive to retrieve a 10 lb diving brick
Course Description:
American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Course. Participants learn professional water rescues. Course includes CPR and First
Aid for the Professional Rescuer. Must success-fully pass written test with 80% or better, and all skills tests. Textbooks, pocket mask, bandage materials, and certification fee included in course fee.

Water Safety Instructor Course (WSI)
includes Fundamentals of Instructor Training (FIT)
Gain confidence in your teaching!
Water Safety Instructor
Successful participants will become water safety instructors for the American Red Cross,
and will be able to teach a variety of swimming courses offered by the ARC including Learn
to Swim Level courses, Water Safety Instructor Aide course, and Basic Water Rescue courses.
Required textbooks and certification fee included in course fee. Optional books available for
purchase at additional cost to student.
Prerequisites:
16 years of age by last day of class
Swim test demonstrating proficient stroke technique in:
25 yards front crawl, 25 yards back crawl, 25 yards breaststroke, 25 yards sidestroke,
25 yards elementary backstroke, 15 yards butterfly
Long shallow dive, basic water rescues
Completion of FIT course (included in class)
Course Description:
American Red Cross Instructor course, includes Fundamentals of Instructor Training (F.I.T.)
Participants learn how to break down swimming strokes and water safety skills to teach to
others in a safe learning environment. Instructor candidates will learn and perform lesson
planning, class and course planning, as well as improve his or her own strokes and skills to
effectively and efficiently demonstrate to students.
Next class: The June/July 2008 WSI class at Happy Fish has been cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances. We will have another class in December 2008, and are planning a class for Spring
2009. We apologize for any inconvenience.
There are two other WSI classes going on this summer in Fairfield and San Rafael, CA.

Lifeguard and CPR for the Professional Rescuer Renewal Courses
Gain confidence in your teaching!
Lifeguard Training with First Aid for the Professional Rescuer expires three years from
the date on your certification card. You must recertify these sections every three years.
Prerequisites:
Participants must have successfully taken an American Red Cross Lifeguard Training course within the last three years, and CPRPR within the last year. Participants must come prepared to perform all in-water skills and CPRPR. It is highly recommended you review your book.
What to Bring:
Swimsuit and other items for swimming and rescues
Lifeguard Training course book
Your own pocket mask. You must have a pocket mask to perform CPR. If you do not bring your
pocket mask, you may purchase one on the day of class for $14.00.
To pass the renewal course: Participants must successfully perform all in-water and/or other physical skills, and pass all written tests with 80% or higher.
